FAQ
How is the project funded?

Eighty percent of the project is paid by the federal government; 10 percent of the funds come from the state; and the City of Minot contributes 10 percent.

How long is the project expected to last?

Phase II is underway and the completion date is late October 2008.

Phase I was completed in October 2007.

How much will the project cost?

The low bid for Phase II of the project was $5,157,575.14

How will I be affected by the project?

Safety and access to the businesses along the route are top priorities for this project as they were with Phase I.

Traffic will be reduced from four to two lanes throughout much of the project and speeds will be reduced in order to maintain the safety of the public and the workers. The driving public will be guided through alternative routes at different times during the project.

The biggest impact on drivers will be the need to take more time traveling Broadway due to the reduced speeds.

How will the roadway be improved by this project?

Phase II will see several improvements to the roadway, some that continue from Phase I and some that are unique to this stretch of roadway. These include:

- Widening of the roadway to 12 foot lanes
- The addition of ADA compliant sidewalks and curb ramps
- Ornamental lighting that will continue the lighting found north of University Avenue

One of the major changes that will occur with Phase II will be transitioning 5th Avenue on the west to connect with 6th Avenue on the east to create a through street with a signaled intersection. This change means that North Broadway will have three signaled and pedestrian friendly intersections at 4th, 6th and University Avenues.

Where does the project begin and end?

Phase II of the North Broadway project extends from 4th Avenue near the viaduct to University Avenue.

Phase I of North Broadway, which was completed last year extended from University Avenue to 21st Avenue North.

Who is working on the project?

Strata Corporation is the prime contractor for Phase II and will be working with several subcontractors.

The subcontractors include: Robert Gibb & Sons, Inc., 3-D Specialties, Traffic Safety Services Inc., Keller Paving, Antigo Construction.

Why do we need to work on North Broadway?

The roadway was last constructed over 40 years ago. The existing road conditions include deteriorated concrete, inadequate roadway capacity, inadequate lane widths, and inadequate pedestrian facilities.

Will North Broadway and the businesses remain open?

Businesses will remain open, although there may be times when alternate access points to businesses will be provided.

Phase II of the project will require temporary closing of portions of the roadway at different times throughout the construction season. Alternative routes will be provided and communication regarding these activities will be extensive.

Will there be any other changes?

All the storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and waterlines also will be replaced along the route.

Additionally, because most of the widening along this portion of North Broadway will occur on the west side, several buildings will be removed. The properties that will be torn down as part of the project include the Barley Pop, Stevick Business Forms, Armstrong Financial, Northwest Music and the former PC Doctor building.

Who is in charge of this project?

The North Dakota Department of Transportation is the lead on this project, working very closely with the City of Minot and Strata Corporation, the primary contractor.

How can I find out what's going on with the project?
